Experience

Arts

TVT’s Visual and Performing Arts Department provides students the ability to marry ideas to action, from TK-12. Whether learning to dance, play music, make a film, write a story, or create a piece of visual art, the discipline of taking an idea to its artistic conclusion is paramount. Students are challenged at all skill levels through trial and error, collaboration, revision, and execution.

In Lower School, students have art and music weekly. These courses are integrated with general studies (language arts, social studies, science) and Jewish Studies. Using varied materials, students create incredible works of art. Whether it is our primary students creating animal models from their imagination or our fifth graders molding clay to portray an emotion, art is a creative, hands-on experience. Our music program involves choral and instrumental experiences, including the five major types of instruments. Students may be using instruments to showcase how punctuation works or learning how to read music on the keyboard. The music program is also part of our Shabbat experience and holiday celebrations.

In Middle and Upper School, our innovative, project-based arts program offers courses in music, visual art, dance, photography, film, poetry, screenwriting, and songwriting to students from kindergarten to twelfth grade. These classes are offered during the day and after school. The culmination of the exciting work created by these young artists and writers is the annual TVT Southern California High School Film Festival. At this festival, TVT’s young creators showcase their original films, music, poetry, and art, as well as compete against thousands of other films entered throughout the country. This, along with multiple showcases throughout the year, gives students the platform to demonstrate what they have developed and provides highly motivational benchmarks to reach. The skills and self-awareness acquired through shepherding a creative impulse to its ultimate conclusion yield life-long dividends in every facet of life.

This program is partially funded by a grant from the Albert and Rhoda Weissman Arts Endowment Fund, a joint program of Jewish Community Foundation Orange County and Jewish Federation & Family Services of Orange County.
